Spotify’s New Music Friday : Should It Really Be Your Top Priority?

“What?! Being on New Music Friday at release is absolutely essential!”

That’s what I hear from most of the artists and professionals I work with. And I understand why. Getting on Spotify’s New Music Friday feels prestigious, visible, and is widely seen as a legitimacy marker in the industry. But is it really the priority everyone should be chasing?

What New Music Friday actually delivers

Let’s be clear : being featured on New Music Friday, or its equivalent on Apple Music or Deezer, does offer strong visibility at the moment of release. It contributes to influencing recommendation systems and remains a relevant goal in the launch plan of an established artist with an existing audience.

Yes, it’s a great showcase. But a showcase is not a guarantee of results.

Why targeting New Music Friday at all costs isn’t essential

Here’s what the data and real-world experience actually reveal about this playlist :

  • Listens are concentrated on a single day. New Music Friday generates most of its traffic on Friday. By the following week, your track is removed to make room for new releases.
  • The audience isn’t qualified for your project. This playlist brings together dozens of different musical genres. The listeners who tune in aren’t necessarily aligned with your universe.
  • The skip rate is structurally high. Listeners come to browse new releases, not to follow a specific artist. A high skip rate sends a negative signal to the algorithm, which can hurt your long-term visibility.
  • It’s primarily watched by music industry professionals. Labels, managers, agents : New Music Friday is a visibility indicator for the industry. But your actual listeners don’t consult it systematically.

What to target instead?

Rather than focusing all your energy on New Music Friday, target thematic editorial playlists that are genuinely aligned with your genre and universe. These playlists offer longer exposure, a better-qualified audience, and generate far more positive engagement signals for the algorithm.

A placement in a niche playlist that fits your music will often have more lasting impact than a brief appearance in a high-profile generalist playlist, however prestigious it may seem.

Don’t be disappointed if you don’t make New Music Friday. Focus your energy where it will produce concrete, lasting results.
