Spotify, Apple Music and other streaming platforms give independent artists a real opportunity : reaching a global audience and building a community of engaged fans. But that opportunity doesn’t materialise without a method. Here are six concrete levers to make it happen.

1. Release consistently, without sacrificing quality

Consistency is one of the most important signals you send, both to the algorithm and to your audience. Releasing new music regularly, whether singles, albums or covers, keeps your project visible and active on the platforms.

But consistency doesn’t mean rushing. Your release frequency needs to be sustainable over time and aligned with the quality of your output. A well-crafted track released every six to eight weeks will have more impact than a rushed one every week.

2. Create your own playlists

Creating your own playlists is an underrated lever. By including your tracks alongside artists you admire or who share your universe, you create an additional entry point for new listeners while reinforcing your artistic positioning.

Share these playlists with your community and encourage them to follow them. It’s a simple way to stay present in your fans’ listening habits, beyond your own releases.

That said, be selective with third-party playlists. Spotify is increasingly wary of certain external curation practices, and being associated with playlists that use questionable methods can harm your editorial visibility.

3. Use social media as a bridge to streaming

Social media doesn’t replace streaming : it feeds it. The goal is to create bridges between your social content and your plays on platforms.

Choose one or two channels where you’re comfortable and where your audience actually is. Share clips, behind-the-scenes content, stories around your releases. The key isn’t to be everywhere, but to be consistent where you are.

4. Interact directly with your fans

Engagement isn’t built passively. Reply to comments, run Q&A sessions, go live. These direct interactions strengthen the bond with your audience and turn casual listeners into loyal fans.

Go further by offering an exclusive experience to your most engaged fans. And beyond social platforms, build a direct relationship : through Bandcamp, Laylo or Membrz.club, you can collect contacts and communicate with your audience without depending on any algorithm.

5. Make full use of platform tools

The tools provided by streaming platforms are too often overlooked. Spotify for Artists in particular lets you pitch tracks to editorial playlists, customise your profile, track listening statistics and understand who your listeners are.

Take the time to explore them thoroughly. Platforms also regularly offer webinars and resources to help you understand best practices and get the most out of their features. It’s free, practical, and often highly actionable.

6. Collaborate with other artists

Collaborations are one of the most effective growth levers for reaching a qualified new audience. Features, remixes, joint projects : these formats expand your visibility while strengthening your artistic credibility.

Be thoughtful about who you collaborate with, though. Look at how they promote their tracks and what practices they use. Partnering with artists who use artificial methods to inflate their numbers can have negative consequences on your own editorial visibility.

These six levers don’t work in isolation. It’s their combination, applied with consistency and over time, that allows you to build a solid audience on streaming platforms.
